Associate Minister's April 2014 Letter

“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says 'I'm possible'!”

(Audrey Hepburn)

The central highlight of the Closing Ceremony of the Sochi Paralympics was a double amputee, Alexey Chuvashev, climbing a rope to place an apostrophe between the ‘I’ and the ‘M’ of IMPOSSIBLE made up of huge letter suspended over the arena.  So corny and yet it worked because the Paralympics is indeed all about impaired athletes achieving impossible results.  His comment was: ‘I am the apostrophe in  “I’m possible.”

If only it was possible to use an apostrophe to defuse the Ukraine crisis!  To turn what seems an impossible situation for the Ukrainian government and the West into any possibility of peace. (Of course President Putin sees it rather differently: ‘I’m Possible’ seems to be his mantra!).

Sadly the propaganda machine in Russia has painted the new government of Ukraine as Fascist – a baffling concept for westerners seeing how huge crowds of protestors refused to give in when the authorities fired at them.  Yet this link between Ukrainians and Fascism goes back to the Second World War when Germany invaded Ukraine in 1941.  Many Ukrainians had experienced violent oppression under Stalin and saw the Nazis as liberators and worked with them against the Russians.  It is descendants of these collaborators that Russia labels Neo-Nazis.

Public expectations in Russia are putting immense pressure on Putin to live up to his reputation as the strong man who can defy the West.  We can only pray that hot-heads on either side don’t start outright war.

As Sir Walter Raleigh, our local hero, warned those who try to cast opinions on current events: whosoever in writing a modern history, shall follow truth too near the heels, it may haply strike out his teeth. Events may have changed completely by the time you read this but one thing is sure – God is very much involved as history unfolds.  Not easy to understand but we can be encouraged by Jesus’ words:  ‘What is impossible with human beings is possible with God’.  Luke 18:27
