Cant’s Home Rebuild Project 7th – 18th April

We were so encouraged by the turn out in Woodbury Salterton Village Hall for the presentation of our project to rebuild the home of a Palestinian family in the Occupied Territories.  We are well over half way raising the £2000 we need as our contribution towards the building costs.

Last month we met up with some of the others in the group and it was inspiriting to hear from several who had been on the previous trip.

We will be helping build a home for a family who bought some land 20 years ago and started building but before they had even got the walls up the Israeli Authorities turned up one morning and destroyed it – the picture shows the building plot.  A house nearby was left standing because it was lived in so the plan is to build the house again as quickly as possible and once the family have moved in it stands a better chance of being left alone.

A previous house build project

We will be staying in Bethlehem and be able to visit the traditional holy sites as well as some of the projects to help Palestinians flourish under the most appalling restrictions imposed by the Israelis.  One of the things we look forward to is getting to know some of the local people and appreciating the extraordinary hope that they hold onto even when things are so dire.

When we can see no solution to the problems of the Middle East it is easy to feel disheartened.   As we approach Easter we know that on Good Friday Jesus’ disciples could see no way out of suffering at the hands of the Roman authorities.  Yet by Easter Day all that had changed and they were filled with the confidence that the presence of the risen Christ brought them.  May that be true for us this Easter too.

PS:  I will be talking about our experiences at 6.30pm, Farringdon Church, Sunday 26th April
