A Carbon Fast for Lent

Lent is late this year – Ash Wednesday is March 5th – but it is not too soon to look at what we might do to make it special. Traditionally we try giving up a luxury like chocolate but what about trying something which takes us to the heart of our relationship with this wonderful world that God has given us. As we climb slowly out of recession the only hope for governments is to increase economic growth. Growth means using more and more resources and spoils the very fabric of the earth.

This year dioceses across the South West are confronting a destructive culture of ease and wastefulness by challenging us to a Carbon Fast for Lent. They divide up a typical person’s carbon footprint into 100 segments or points and then assign points to each of the things we do. For example not having loft insulation is 2 points, having your thermo-stat 20C hotter than you need is 2 points, shopping at the supermarket instead of buying locally sourced food represents 18 points and so on.

The challenge is to find 40 points that you have either saved already or will do especially for Lent. Hopefully by the end of Lent those extra things will have become so rewarding that you’ll want to carry on!

For more information and especially to see the poster with all the suggestions and points marked on then go to www.thecarbonfast.org - You can also sign up for emails through-out Lent to help and encourage you and find other resources and information.

For me I reckon I qualify for over 30 points already so I have to find some more to make the target of 40 for the Lent Carbon Fast. That is enough of a challenge and I will let you know how it goes.
