Associate Minister's January 2016 Letter

As we begin 2016 we wonder what a new year will bring.  The news can seem like an unending torrent of bad things happening and yet alongside that there are always stories of people quietly getting on with living lives full of hope and goodwill.

In 2015 we were privileged to go to Bethlehem and spend a few days with people who have been refugees for their whole lives and help one family build a home.  We were overwhelmed by their quiet strength and resilience in the face of constant humiliation and setbacks.  In August a film was made which you can see on YouTube by typing in: ‘rebuilding home, rebuilding hope’.  Or look at the amostrust.org website, Palestine section where there is the same film and a write up by one of the team.  It expresses beautifully the impact of building that house had on both one family and on their whole community.  Just last month they were able to get an electricity supply connected.

It is easy to get put off going to the Holy Land by the pictures of protests and violence but just that step of going is Good News for those who are struggling to make a living and feel forgotten and isolated.  Amos Trust are organising a trip in October: Taste of Palestine Culinary trip – it is based in the kitchens, restaurants and markets of Bethlehem and Nazareth.  More about in on the amostrust.org website.

How is God going to help us focus on Good News this year?  Here is a verse which I find encouraging, especially when bad news seems to fill our TV screens:

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and in his grace gave us unfailing courage and a firm hope,  encourage you and strengthen you to always do and say what is good. 2 Thess 2:16-17

May that be true for each one of us and may you all have a Happy New Year.

Revd Christopher Cant
