The Queen Becomes the Longest Ruling Monarch

On September 9th this year, at some time in the evening, Queen Elizabeth II becomes the longest reigning monarch ever recorded.  She passes the reign of Queen Victoria, her great great grandmother who reigned for 63 years and 216 days.

We know that these milestones produce a great media storm as we celebrate what our Queen has achieved but she, herself, is determined to avoid any triumphalism and just keep the occasion as an ordinary day like any other.

I am one of those born just before George VI died in February 1952 and so this 2nd Elizabethan age has been our world.  Will future generations looking back on this period in the same way as people talk of the Victorian era?  ‘Victorian’ encapsulates something of the bold confidence of that period whereas the world has changed so much more in these last 60 years.  It all depends on what comes next!

The one thing that has remained constant in these last 63 years has been the Queen’s own strength of faith in the God who sustains and guides us.  Whatever has befallen the nation or her own family life we know her loyalty and service to this country has always been paramount.  An incredible example to us all when feelings and emotions rule so many.

Even if this turns out to be a golden age soon to unravel globalisation will stop us calling it simply ‘Elizabethan’.  Whatever lies ahead we all need to trust God for wisdom and guidance.  And whatever way you choose to mark the Queen becoming our longest reigning monarch, give God thanks that we have lived to see it happen!
