A New Reader Licensed

On Saturday 8th October Joanna and I went to Chelmsford Cathedral for the licensing service for 8 new Readers in Chelmsford Diocese – Readers are lay people who are authorised to preach and lead worship throughout the Anglican Communion.  One of them was Ellen Hunt who is a member of our previous congregation.  It was so moving to see her make her promises to serve faithfully in the church and in the community and be commissioned by the Bishop.  A wonderful service altogether.

Ellen only became a regular churchgoer soon after we arrived in Hainault in 1998.  After a few years she started helping with the youth group and then I noticed how good her manner was when talking to large groups of people.  She helped with the family services and started running children’s activity days three times a year and organised the children’s holiday club a couple of years running.

At that point Ellen would have described herself as very much a beginner in the Christian faith but decided to do the 2 year Christian Studies Course run by the Diocese.  Towards the end she was encouraged to pray about Reader training – not an easy thing to fit in with family and a part time job.  Ellen felt this was what God was calling her to do.  We were all behind Ellen encouraging her in what has been a demanding and daunting two years – she found herself having to do far more than she would ever have imagined possible.  We look forward to seeing how God continues to develop her ministry.

It makes me wonder whether there are people in the White Cross Mission Community who might be being prompted by the Holy Spirit to explore the idea of becoming a Reader.  I know there are many who take lay led services and it might be that more training would really help in widening horizons and building confidence.

Exeter Diocese is promoting Exploring Christianity as a first step for anyone who wants to know more about what Christians believe and why. It would be really good to have a group here in the White Cross Churches where we could all learn together.  The course consists of six modules each one taking 10 weeks:

Spirituality and Prayer

Exploring the Bible—New Testament

Questions of Faith

Reshaping Church

Exploring the Bible—Old Testament

Challenging Choices (Ethics)
