Something Extra for Lent?

Someone sent me a captioned photo-graph the other day which they must have known would strike a chord. It was a picture of a large sleepy-looking bear rubbing its eyes and the caption was ‘The vicar opened her eyes after her post-Christmas nap to see Lent thundering towards her…’ This year, Easter is so early that it squeezes into March, with the result that Ash Wednesday, which marks the first day of Lent, is on February 13th, the day before St Valentine’s Day.

So, almost before the New Year resolutions have had a chance to wear off, we are into ‘giving up’ or ‘taking up’ something for Lent! And as usual, we try to provide an opportunity to get together over the weeks of Lent to ex-perience and deepen our faith together and perhaps to learn something new or look at familiar things in a new way. It starts with our Ash Wednesday evening service, where we receive a small smear of ash on our foreheads in the traditional way, as a symbol of sorrow for our sins and shortcomings, and our desire for God’s help in being the people he created us to be.

Then our Lent Group will be meeting on Thursday afternoons from 2pm – 3.30pm, and we will be meeting at a number of different churches so it might be a good idea to pin this page to your notice-board.

Dates for Lent:

Feb 13th Evening service for Ash Wednesday at Clyst St George Church, with imposition of ashes.

Feb 14th 2pm – 3.30pm Lent Group Clyst St Mary Church – St Valentine –

Feb 21st 2pm – 3.30pm Lent Craft Group Exton Church - ‘The Work of Our Hands’ – activity provided but bring your own work also if desired.

Feb 28th 2pm – 3.30pm Lent Group Woodbury Church

March 7th 2pm – 3.30pm – Lent Group Clyst St Mary Church

March 14th 2pm – 3.30pm – Lent Group Farringdon Village Hall

March 21st 2pm – 3.30pm – Lent Craft Group ‘To Work is to Pray’ – activity pro-vided but bring your own work also if desired.

Topics are still under discussion, but we hope to start with an appropriate Valen-tine’s Day theme on Feb 14th. Two of the dates are the day and time of our existing Craft Group which meets at Exton church, and so those days will be still craft ori-ented but with a Lent theme. An activity will be provided to help us think, so those sessions will be just as open to those who are not ‘crafty’ as those who are.

We also hope to include a storytelling session to give us a deeper insight into a familiar Bible story, and one session will be taken by Anne Dunlop, who is a Reader currently training for ordination, who will be on placement with us between now and Easter. So it should be an inter-esting and varied programme.

In addition, if you were thinking you had missed the boat for confirmation this year, there is still time, so please, whether adult or younger, do have a word with me about the possibilities.

Have a blessed Lent, and recharge those spiritual batteries for the joys of Easter!
