Call for confirmation!

Chris has written a long and interesting article about the very ‘topical topic’ of Jubilee this month, so I will just write a few words. The response to last month’s article about ‘Faith’ has shown me once again what we all suspect – that a lot of people have a faith which they may be a little unsure of because they are not quite sure what they are ‘supposed’ to believe and worry that perhaps if they found out they might be found wanting in some way.

But the truth is that being a Christian is not so much about being able to put a ‘tick’ in a series of doctrinal boxes, but about start-ing from exactly where we are, seeing God through the person of Jesus, and letting the Holy Spirit guide us into understanding more and more about what that means.

Moving on to the next step is as simple as putting one foot in front of another, and one way of doing it is to explore the idea of being confirmed. Really, anyone who believes enough to be glad that they have been baptised ought to ‘confirm’ (a word which actually means ‘strengthen’) their faith in this way, by taking on the promises that were made for them at their baptism and learning a little more about what those promises mean in practice.

Confirmation is open to those of any age from about 10 upwards, and don’t worry if you are in the older end of that scale; it is not at all unusual and I have had one lady in her eighties who missed being con-firmed as a teenager due to the Blitz!

I wrote a fuller article about this a while back, which will be reprinted with a selec-tion of other past articles in a small booklet which should be available in our churches by the time you read this.

Do let me know by phone or better still email if you would be interested.
