Rector's June 2013 letter

It is Chris’s turn to write a longer article again, so I will just make a few ‘summery’ remarks, in the hope that the weather will read this and catch up with them!

We are entering the Village Fete season and I hope to have the chance of meeting people around the various villages at what are always very enjoyable occasions.  Inevitably, there are sometimes clashes, but I do try to get to as many as I can – there was one Saturday a couple of years ago when I went to four in one day and started to feel as if I was in an episode of the Vicar of Dibley!

We also have what must be almost a record number of weddings around our churches this year, with several already accomplished and more to come over the next months.  So I would just like to remind anyone currently thinking about marriage options that it is much simpler these days to marry in church than it used to be, even if you have moved away from the village where you grew up, or if are already living together or have have children, or have been previously married and divorced.  Nor it is as expensive as people sometimes think – it costs a little more than a registry office ceremony, but nothing like the sums charged by the various secular marriage venues, and can be anything from a quiet, simple ceremony to the archetypal ‘Big Wedding’.

Marriage is one of the turning points of our lives, and it is a wonderful idea to mark that by making it a very special sacred celebration, and ask God’s help and blessing for the future.

If you would like to know more, do phone or email me for details.

And lastly, we will be saying ‘Goodbye’ this month to our Diocesan Bishop, Bishop Michael.  Details of his leaving ‘do’ will be on the diocesan website.  Please do pray for him and Esther his wife in their well-earned retirement, and pray also for those charged with finding a replacement who can help us to make ‘Heaven in Devon’ a reality in years to come.
